Hi everyone,

Pardon me being a computer building noob, but my friend helped me pick out the parts for a new PC last week. We put it together, and I'm getting some really low FPS on this new rig as compared to my 2010 machine that we had been upgrading over time. I'm using the same graphics card I had on the previous, so I doubt that is the cause, but where I used to get 40-60 FPS in GTA5, I'm now staying at a fairly stable 30 FPS. This seems to also translate to a few other games, but I haven't tested them all yet. This low FPS doesn't seem like a big win in my favor as I had a pretty decent machine. Kinda feels like I spent $1500~ for nothing. :(

I'd love to hear any thoughts you might have as to the cause. Is it likely the CPU or do you think there could be another factor in this build? Am I better off returning the CPU for an Intel as Ryzen may not be optimized w/ certain games?

CORSAIR CXM series CX750M 750W

GIGABYTE AORUS GA-AX370-Gaming K7

AMD Ryzen 7 1700X Processor

Corsair Force MP500 Series M.2 SSD 240GB Internal Drive

Seagate 4TB Enterprise Capacity

Sapphire 11244-01-20G Radeon NITRO R9 390 8GB

*I can list other relevant rig pieces upon request (Water cooler, etc, etc)

Thank you!

The Ryzen 7 should waste any games. It won't be as good as a 7700K for pure gaming, but it's giving it a run for it's money. And if GTA5 isn't optimized for 8c/16t, then it'll only use 4.

@kyledempster7,

At what speed is your memory kit running? Not what it is rated for, but the actual speed.

How much memory?

Are you using the latest motherboard BIOS?

Is the cpu overclocked? If so, to what speed?

What was your 2010 - cpu (oc?), memory (speed & quantity), motherboard.

what brand of ram, what speeds is the ram running at and what capacity of ram is there?

We bought G.SKILL Flare X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232530. CPUz was reading it as 1199 speed. Is it true CPUz only reports half the speed? We were trying to make it higher in bios using the web recommended numbers, but it maxed at the 1199.

OMEN by HP 32-inch QHD Display is the main display. DP running at 1440.

Temps and load in game?

I'll have to boot it up when I'm back home to get that number for you. I want to say the CPU has been hovering around 60-80 C. I heard that Ryzen is currently reporting 20 C hotter than it really is. Load, from memory was under 30%.

Big thanks to everyone chiming in! I'll work on getting the missing details.

1199 in CPU-Z indicates that the memory is operating at 2400MHz. To run the memory at its advertised speed, go into the BIOS and enable/select an XMP memory profile or manually adjust the memory settings.

Hmm, the weird thing is, we did manually set the settings. We can't figure out why it isn't reflecting it in CPU-Z after doing it. I'm at a loss on that. :(

If you go back into the BIOS are your memory settings still there?

I'm leaning towards a GPU or graphics settings issue. My 1070 is running 40-60fps in Fallout4 in 4k on my Ryzen machine.

Hmm, very well could be. I'm hoping it's just a software issue as the card worked fine before porting it to the new build.

I just remembered I had screenshotted some Heaven and 3D Mark tests I ran this weekend. I wasn't impressed with the 3d mark at all. https://goo.gl/photos/hfybddFf4yjDNY3o8

PS: I just realized 3DMark says Graphics driver not approved. So, I'm thinking a DDU is needed tonight. Does the CPU Test Score look ok or is that low too?

That should get you to 4.0GHZ easy if you ever feel brave to dive into OC.

Not that it's necessary, but any improvement to core clock is a benefit.

I'm definitely down to try it in the future! That's for the advice. I guess I want to get the baseline working first though. I was watching season 3 of scrapyard wars, saw their scores from the rigs they made and my jaw dropped that this new PC was soooo far behind in the tests. Need to get it working at an acceptable level before I dive into OC :)

I firmly believe this is some sort of settings issue either in the card settings, game settings, or something wonky going on with BIOS. The 1700x should have no problem keeping up with ultra settings @ 144hz. Granted your 390 can't, but it should do better than 30...

Thanks! I was thinking the same thing! I'm going to start with a DDU tonight. If that doesn't fix it, I'll try to reinstall any mobo updates from Gigabyte. Maybe it is board related because it won't do anything with the ram clock speeds. Even though we manually input the numbers, it's keeping the ram speed at the lowest settings.

For overclocking see the guide in my sig.

Make sure you are using the latest motherboard BIOS.

Is your Flare X the 2400 kit? If so then it is running at the correct speed. DDR in DDR4 stands for double data rate so effectively double speed because of 2 actions per cycle but not double frequency. Which is why it is a bit confusing to call it 2400MHz RAM. CPU Z should read ~ 1200MHz which it is for you so don't worry. If it is the higher speed flare X kit then you need to select the memory speed again in the BIOS.

Are you using a clean install of windows or the one from the old build? You absolutely should be using a clean install.

20 deg offset should be fixed now in BIOS and monitoring software so you should be able to trust temps, I use HWInfo64 in sensor only mode to monitor my Ryzen voltages and temps.

After you have considered all of the above grab the latest graphics driver, remove the previous and install the latest.

I have the Flare X 3200 kit. I'll work to reset it as the numbers we input are having no effect.

It is a clean version of windows.

Hm, I'll have to try the HWInfo64 sensor to test the temp.

Thank you! I'll report back when I get the chance to make those changes.
