 A close friend of mine wants to buy a new PC. He has a budget of €1000 - €1500. He wanted to invest in a laptop, although he mostly only uses his current laptop at home.

He hasn't discovered the joys of PC building yet and it breaks my heart, so we made an agreement. If I present a build cool enough that he can't refuse over a laptop, he'll rather invest in a desktop and I help him build it.

My idea however is the following: plan a build that go a high as €1200-€1300 tops and with the rest find a (Windows) laptop decent enough for basic tasks he might need on a go, even if it is something like an HP Stream.

Anyway, what he'll use it (the desktop) for:

- gaming, although he doesn't want to admit (he plays a lot in his free time, and why would he want a €1500 PC for facebook and light backend coding?)

- media player;
- possibly work sometimes (although he has a company PC for it);

Requirements;

- Has to be compact enough to put either behind, or next to a TV in a small table (so micro ATX, mini ITX);

- The budget doesn't include a monitor, but peripherals. Since he'll use it as a media PC and will paly using an XBox controller (that he already has), I was thinking reccomending a Logitech k400 Plus;

- It should be planned for a 4K 60Hz image output;

- Storage: I was thinking a combo of a base SSD for OS + stuff that mostly benefits with it + a bigger HDD;

- For the laptop: no smaller screen than 14''.

Can you guys help me plan this build? Thanks in advance.

Hmm, this is my first thought

CPU - R5 1600

Any decent B350 mobo

Gtx 1080

Inwin 301

Rgb fans

Decent psu

This'll push 4k no problem, punch it into local pcpp and you are good to go

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

There are not decent mini-ITX Ryzen motherboards at the moment. Here is an Intel build that is a bit over your budget goal. That could be remedied by replacing the all ssd storage with a more conventional ssd/hdd combination.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
