First off what are you looking for the be compatible ?

 

If it's just the modem working with a router, then yes most likely just connect up the wan port on the router

just the router and the modem

Any router will work with any modem.  The critical thing is to ensure that your cable modem is compatible with your cable internet provider.  Many providers restrict access to a very, very narrow subset of modems, even often to specific firmware versions of those modems.
