It's interference from the onboard audio.

It doesn't matter how many buzzwords Asus stamps onto their product, onboard audio is prone to interference due to proximity with other components.

I have an expensive Asus board as well when using the onboard audio I get static when scrolling the mouse wheel.

Is it possible that some USB ports are 'wired' further away from the onboard audio?

Maybe switching to a different USB port will fix it. Just a shot in the dark.
