Some help with U-Verse

Hey guys! 

Okay, so, after a good year of fiddling with networks (To no avail-- I still don't understand anything), I have come to the realization that my ISP (AT&T) provided me with a 6Mbps download limit. Given that my family is mostly avid internet users and school students, I was almost outraged! Now, I know I'll be having a talk to the local AT&T store, but for the time being, I needed a little insight on what I could do to improve my internet speed. I'll soon upgrade my plan to a 75Mbps download limit, and I'm hoping the internet speed spikes up a bit, because that was just horrendous. I'm really new to this, so I'm hoping someone could give me some insight on the best modems and routers to get that support U-Verse? And, would it be better for me to switch to Comcast altogether? I know I should post this on AT&T forums, but they haven't helped me without confusing me. Again, I am a newbie to networks and stuff, so I would be grateful if someone provided me with an answer which I could easily understand. I'm not concerned with pricing as much, in case that's a question anyone had.
