Hey there!

I was thinking people might be interested in a setp-by-step tutorial for my current unraid setup, since it involves a few hoops to jump through to get to this point, and I certainly spent more time than I should have needed researching how to do these things. So if you think there could be interest out there for it, I'd put in the time needed to grab screenshots of all steps and write a compulsive, step by step guide.

My current setup involves 2 servers, both running the latest version of unraid one on a haswell, the other one on a kabylake pentium chip. Both servers have 6tb of storage, one in a 4x2 the other one in a 3x3TB setup.

One server is also running an apache, a minecraft and (most importantly) a plex and an openVPN server, all of which are accessible from outside the local network.

The servers both have 2 shares, one of which holds a copy of the other server's main share. Every week all folders, except the ones holding photos or videos will get backed up into a separate folder on that share, so that a messed up file can be restored to any of the former weekly backups.

If I were to write this thing I'd throw in, how to do this syncing over the vpn, although this is not my current solution.

So what do you think? Is it worth my time, or will the only ones reading be people who know this stuff better than me anyway?

If you're going to start running multiple servers you might want to have a look in to Nutanix which is quite similar to unRAID in a lot of ways but supports pooling storage across servers in to a single logical pool. It also supports storage level snapshots for backups and other really cool stuff.

The community edition is free to use and has all features, the only limit is the number of hosts/servers which from memory is 4.
