1x1? 4x4?

Ok, I hate sounding like a nube, but what does these kinda specs mean when a WiFi module(either on board or an adapter) is 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, or 4x4? Is there a benifit of one over another?

I know there are specs like 4x4 on the PCE-AC88 https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/PCE-AC88/

and I've seen other WiFi solutions be described as 1x1 and 2x2 (i presume there must be 3x3)
