Whats the differance ?

Say I wanted to just have a graphics card and not expand that way at all whats the difference between the

Asus - MAXIMUS IX FORMULA ATX LGA1151 Motherboard and the   Asus - STRIX Z270G Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  besides ones atx and ones mini atx

Clear cmos button, bios flashback more usb ports, more pcie lanes, more sata ports on the atx.

You can also water cool your vrms on the atx.

so if I wanted a smaller build I could go with a mini atx without sacrificing key points ? I plan on running 1 m.2 drive as main storage so sata is not an issue and usb ports should not be that big of a deal

Yea pretty much. I would never pay that much for a motherboard if budget is an issue. You can save money and get way better hardware.

If you're using the m.2 for OS and apps, I recommend you get a sata ssd instead, m.2 doesn't actually improve boot or app launch times.
