So I normally leave my computer on for weeks at a time, so I can't really pinpoint when the issue happened. But last night after an update and restart, NONE of my games work, and Steam is "forgetting" the installation of multiple games. When I restart my computer, I hear the "device disconnected" noise, but there is no pop-up or anything in the taskbar saying what it is. I can only assume it is either my graphics card (GTX 780), or my boot SSD, as any game installed on it isn't recognized in Steam. Games on my other hard drive are recognized, but instantly crash when I start them. Watching videos fullscreen (tested on youtube and twitch) also freeze my computer. I have tried to remove the Windows Update (a security hotfix, the uninstall failed). I have trying doing a System Restore to about a week ago, which also failed, and I have reinstalled my gpu drivers multiple times (even with DDU), to no avail. I've ran Avast Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes (Anti-Malware AND ADW), which also hasn't worked. I'm at a loss because everything was working fine before the first reboot.

I'm considering it but I really want to make sure that's the only option before I do. I have a data cap and will have to redownload a lot of software.

you could take an image or clone the drive before doing it. you could also take the 780 out and see if the problem still exists with your igpu.

Well, I tried with my 780 out and the same issue. It gives me some relief that it isn't dying, but now I'm worried about my SSD. I'm 90% sure w/e is causing the device disconnect noise is the issue, I don't think I'm having hardware failure. Welp, guess I gotta restore.

Actually, I tried a few other games and they seem to work. Maybe it's some kind of DirectX issue or something?

Hey! I just saw this and your issue seems familiar to what happened to me. This happened to me when i had my gtx 680 in the system and recently with the gtx 1080. Both times i fixed it by opening the case and blowing out all the dirt and dust as much as possible. The gtx 680 was a bit more dirty so i had to actually take it apart, clean piece by piece, reapply the gpu thermal paste and put it back together. I would recommend opening the case, using some kind of blower to remove the loose dirt and dust and then using a compressed air can in small spaces like the pcie slots and ram slots. Try cleaning out the hdmi, dvi and vga ports on your card and your monitor. If you see some issues with your ssd, try cleaning the connections to your storage devices aswell. So i dont know if this will help you but your problem seems like the same issue i had so it wouldnt hurt to try it out. Let us know how it goes :)
