Not getting an IP

Go to solution Solved by Donut417,

Ok is it a modem/router combo or just a modem. Because generally your ISP will only provide a single IP address. So if you have multiple computers connected via a switch connected to the modem, then you must have a modem/router combo for the other machines to be connected. That leads me to believe that there could be an issue with the DHCP server, which you will need to login to your Modem/router combo to check. My guess, is the DHCP server ran out of addresses or something. Or you could have the other devices MAC addresses white listed.

For starters this how my cable goes:

modem-ethnernet wall outlet-switch-pc*

Problem: not getting an ip

What ive already tried:

  • Reboot (ofc)
  • ip config/renew and all those commands
  • router-pc via cable works fine

Side notes:

  • it works perfectly for every one else on the network
  • DHCP is enabled

This is a really weird existential moment....

Science fiction movies always taught me that you shouldn't meet your alternate self, but this is not what I expected.

It feels like being in an episode of the Twilight Zone.

Does your router actually recognize your PC's MAC address? If it does you can just assign it a static IP.

Well, is the modem set into bridge mode? If it is it won't really deal out IP addresses. That would be the router.

You couid also check if the modem is recognizing your PC on the network and just not assigning it an IP address.
