i have an extremely old laptop running win7. its really laggy and i was thinking to upgrade to win10. does win10 use less resources? i have 2gb ram and a Pentium t2330 CPU

If you are experiencing laggy issues, keep on using Windows 7 becuase Windows 10 is using more resources. If you decided to use Windows 10, you might consider buying a new laptop.

Just do a fresh install of Windows 7. That is a super easy way to make an old computer faster.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

You'd have to teach the user how to work with Linux, as it's a lot different than Windows. Even just reinstalling Windows makes a world of difference.

Trust me, I use a laptop older than that as my daily driver. I understand how they are. If the RAM wasn't that limited, I'd say do a fresh install of Windows 10, but Windows 7 would be better on 2GB of RAM.

List it out and let me know other software you need to use.
