Trying to overclock again

So i have apparently reset my overclock after a reinstall. And for some reason i can not figure out how to revert to manual overclock in the intel extreme tuning utility program. Was it even that program i used?


I tried to do it through bios but im a complete noob so i could not figure it out.

 

Anyway. Is anyone still using this CPU and have some tips?  Also it seems i can run different overclocks when only one Core is loaded, Sounds neat, do you have any experience doing that? what did you achieve?

Asus P9X79 Pro

CPU - 3930k - Noctua NH-D15s

RAM 24 ( i believe at 2400mhz)

GPU Gainward 1070

Storage 1x480SSD 1x7.5TB

PSU (1000W)

Display

Asus 1440p - 165hz - 1ms

You should be using the BIOS

Don't use programs to overclock within windows, and don't use any auto overclock that may be in the BIOS, they can set stupid voltages.

Make small changes one at a time, and take the time to test teach setting for stability. Keep monitoring performance, system power draw, CPU and VRM temperatures as you go.

 

My 3930K system is still working although is nearing deaths door, I ran it at 4.2GHz for nearly 4 years under 24/7 load, and the motherboard VRMs suffered terribly. I was able to get it stable at 4.4 GHz, although was not convinced it would have been a good idea to run that long term. As I only run heavily multithreaded programs, I saw no reason to set overclocks depending on number of cores under load.

I have replaced the thermal pads on the VRM heatsink, but have dropped it down to 3.6GHz to put less strain on the motherboard.
