wired internet connection problems

Go to solution Solved by Windows7ge,

Is the Gigabit port driver installed? I've had this issue before.

You'd want to buy a gigabit switch not a router if you need more wired physical devices and you've run out of ports on your router.

So I just built a new PC but I am having some trouble getting it to connect to the internet via Ethernet cable. I have no idea what to do.

Also, I need to get an Ethernet connection in my living room. Would buying another router be the easiest option?

Well I'm not sure how I would install a driver without the internet.

I have enough ports, I just don't want to run a long cable out to the living room, mainly because I'm living with someone else and I'm in an apartment.

You can use the NIC driver on the CD that came with the motherboard. Also it's kind of expected that you have at least one other computer with internet access.

Even if you bought a router you'd still have to run a cable to the main router there's no way around that.

And if I didn't keep the CD?

oh. Set your modem router thing to act as a modem only, and see if that works. If not, get a new router

Get on another computer, go to the manufacturers website. Find the NIC driver for your board. Save it to a thumb drive. Then plug it in and install it. Although Windows 10 usually comes with a NIC driver. Do you get any activity at all when the network cable is plugged in? Icon on the desktop do anything?

Alright. It seems the most basic place to start. Beyond that we do more complicated things.

Verify that the cable works.

Check the network configuration under Network Connections

Check the BIOS. For some reason it's sometimes an option to disable the LAN port.

Installed drivers, works now. Thanks!

This is why we start with easy solutions and gradually try more complicated ones.
