Been on a tech binge this week and am thinking about a cheapo NAS build.

Looking to replace my main rig's (non-redundant) drive sharing, that I've been using as a pseudo-nas, with a dedicated NAS with in-home streaming capability. Essentially a NAS/HTPC.

I can't seem to come up with the right search terms to find the information :P

I was looking into freenas, then using it's VM capabilities to stream from my main rig. But then I realized that I would potentially only really be able to use vnc; adding more latency/quality issues.

Is there something better out there that I should be looking into?

What are you looking to stream? Video/Music or games too?

You could look into installing plex on your NAS and using plex clients on your devices that you want to stream to if it's not games.

i pretty much just have a SAMBA share in my server, and use vareous forms of clients hooked into that share for media consumption. my HTPC runs kodi hooked into movie and music libraries on the share, my desktop has foobar hooked into the music library, and i just browse and click if i want to watch a movie :D

Just now, squirrl said:

It's mostly just games. Currently I'm using a steam link to play games, then minimize "big picture" and gain desktop access to my main rig for music, movies and Kodi.

I'm looking to 'lose' the steam link and gain redundant storage while maintaining low latency
