No, it's a common myth that looking at a screen in the dark is bad for your eyes. 

 

However, some people feel more fatigued in a scenario like that, or have trouble adjusting to the dark when not looking at the monitor. In that case a little light in the room (anywhere is fine, doesn't have to be behind the monitor) can be more pleasant. Personal choice really.
