Hey all.

I typically hang around the car thread but figured I should make a mini build log to just introduce myself. (I'll update the log occasionally as I phase out old parts).

(Computer specs are in description) but here's a little pic of my computer when I had a whimpy freezer 7.

I have since then upgraded to a nice Phanteks :D

The computer is ok for right now but I have bigger plans:

Xeon x5650 CPU (overclocked to a nice 4ghz?) - Done

RX580/570 (both cause of performance and looks) -Holding off for now as I got the Gtx 460 in.

New 8 or 16 gigs of DDR3 ram that match the colour scheme.

Moar HDDs (1/2tb) - Semi-done (got another 500gb drive)

1 more front fan to give air to the CPU cooler -Done

Metal plate to block of view of power supply/cables (probs gonna spray paint it black).

Glass/plastic/acrylic side panel to show off :P

So bought the xeon processor today for $25. Put it into the system aaannnddd nothing. No signal. Tried random things for an hour before realizing I should update my BIOS and see if that helps. Updated the BIOS and voila. Booted right up with no problem. 30*C with no overclock, but that will change soon.

Very nice, I wanted to get a Xeon for my intel dx580so listed in my sig, but the only ones supported are quite expensive on ebay and simply not worth it. I'd want a 6C/12T

Honestly, it's nice but not needed (for me). The graphics card and ram completely bottleneck the CPU.

Update:

Jammed in a GTX460 I had laying around. Computer is a fair bit quieter and games are actually at a good FPS. Might hold off on a new GPU for a while more.

Got a free 500Gb HDD off a friend so that's nice too.

Installed another front fan but it didn't do that much so I've kinda just left it in there (disconnected).

What paint did you use for the ram? Im thinking of getting a pair to paint purple for my build but I keep seeing people say painting will make it hotter and therefore slower and since im running 4790 I can only manage 1600mhz DDR3 which is already the lowest end in ram.

Edit- Also does it affect your performance?

I decided not to paint it for the exact reasons you stated above. Try getting other ram heat spreaders instead.

Figured that I should update this topic. Got a cheapo used touch screen fan controller, so all my fans are running way quieter (600rpm vs like 1000). Pretty nice quiet upgrade. Still waiting for a good GPU deal as prices have skyrocketed thanks to all the Etherum miners....
