I just bout my first serious laptop in a while (Dell XPS). As I continue to set it up, I went into the network sharing settings, and was instantly able to access my PC files because they are both connected on the same network. But i did not set the machines up in a homegroup. Is it because they both use the same Microsoft account and passwords, or is it because its connected to the same network? I want to be able to wirelessly transfer things from time to time, but other people live in the house, and I don't want them to go snooping into my files. Please help me set it up properly, or explain how it works. Thank you!

Space Journal #1: So Apparently i  was dropped on the moon like i'm a mars rover, in a matter of hours i have found the transformers on the dark side of the moon. Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

If i'm not wrong, when you install windows, and get into windows for the first time, a pop up on your screen ask " Do you want other computer in the network to access your files Bla bla bla"

So you probably clicked YES there for ur computers in your house.

Just go on google and search how to disable that or any information you need

Thank you!, if you want I can create a higher resolution picture for your background. When I first accessed my PC, the sharing options (even homegroup) were all turned off. The dell was able to access the files anyway. But let me look into it more.

How does it show up when you access them?  To the best of my knowledge it doesn't just enable full system sharing by default.  Regardless, what you choose to share, if anything, can be controlled by who can access it, what they can do (read or also write, etc.) and all that.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

From what I am getting at is that, since I have "password protected sharing" on, Only my XPS can access the PC since it uses the same windows 10 account and vice versa. When I try to discover any other PCs on the network, it wont show my uncles laptop/mac , or my brothers PC/mac. I guess only the computers on the network that have access to the profile password can access the files. I will test this by using my uncles computer.

So here's the update: If you go through the settings properly, and enable Password protect, and another option that decides whether you, or windows should manage a homegroup. If you manage it, and enable password protect, then another PC on the network can't access the files without the user name and password of the profile it is trying to connect to.

On the computer you want secure open "Computer Management" on the left pane click "Shared Folders". You can manage your shares here. Don't worry about the default shares if you are not joined to a domain.

Yea I figured everything out. This is a very neat feature. If I take my notebook out of the house and connect it to another network, can I still access the homegroup or no?
