Do you feel like your CPU performance is lacking? If I were you I wouldn't bother. BCLK overclocking is a pain in the ass since intel locked people out of it on non-K CPU's

You can't overclock your 6400. If you're talking about a blck overclock then don't.

If you're lacking in performance then an i7-6700K should be fine.

everything i've ever watched/read on the matter says you need to be using an older version of motherboard BIOS's that predate the lockout. so not that it isn't doable, but you won't be doing it on up-to-date BIOS revisions.... is this not correct?

maybe with the older boards but my board was released after that rumor and came with the bios which were overclockable. heres my trash video on it

I'm unsure when the lockout actually happened... or what "Sky OC"is...... but it appears your motherboard received an overclock lock shortly after its release (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/B150M Pro4Hyper/index.us.asp?cat=Download&os=BIOS). odds are you're running an older revision. It could also potentially be that BCLK overclocking is not a standard feature of a B150 chipset, and is instead a manual add-on feature of your specific motherboard courtesy of ASrock so perhaps that affords them some kind of special loophole? I don't know.

yea only the boards with the added bclk chip can overclock properly. the microcode rumor was around feb last year i beleive adn this board/bios are from june so not sure. either way this works on this board and all "hyper" series asrock board along with a few from msi and others with the added chip. not sure how the earlier ones worked but its defenatly possible and affordable. this board costed me 114$ new and a h110 board was 110$ at the time and cheapest z170 woulda been nearly double that price. the z170 also cannot overclock non k cpus properly either as far as im aware but it is possible, you most likely wont get as big of an overclock though since you will be limited to what the i3 bclk limit is. usual around 5-10 max from what i know anyway

edit: according to pauls hardware he managed to get 130bclk overclock on as asrock z170 board. unsure if it had an added chip for bclk/other for overclocking or it was running just the standard chipset. asrock is usualy pretty good with that but id double check either way to make sure the z170 board you get is good for it as im pretty sure not all are great bclk overclockers on non k cpus.

Okay, after more research on the matter, Intel DEFINITELY made the lockout, and your board also has that lockout on the up to date BIOS revisions (that is the removal of the "SKY OC" thing I was mentioning earlier). Your board is operating on a BIOS which exists before they implemented their lockout. since the overclocking (or lack thereof) of a non-K CPU is a BIOS level thing, simply using older BIOS revisions will get you around this issue.

Not exactly. What happens is a microcode update, THAT is what really kills the oc. The bios, on it's own, isn't doing much, it's the microcode update that comes with it that matters.

For instance, if you had a fancy mobo that allows you to pick the microcode revision manually (some very high end boards do), then you can actually use newer BIOS and still retain the ability to OC. It's an uncommon situation, hence the simplification to "new bios = problem", but it is good to know what's behind it.

i bought a brand new asrock z170 pro4 with sky oc the other week for £53 and it oc's my i3 6320 to 4.5ghz easy on a 3.7 bios i think :) i had a msi gaming m7 z170 that worked as well on a custom bios and also asrock oc formula let you choose the mirco code even on the newest bios.

for a low clocked 6400 this is a great thing to do as you get stock 7600K performance for a big discount
