for the past week or so my cpu (i7 4790 'non k') has been acting unusual..

the temps are going up high with high load for almost no reason..

for example.. when i open google chrome, the temps will go to 50c then back down.. with 30% load or so..

i dont think thats normal... do u?

not sure if windows are causing this or something is wrong with my cpu for some reason

Side Note: My pc runs smoothly tho.. games run just fine with no lost in performance.

and my cooler is 212 evo.. been using it for 2 years now

Well it's normal for when you open chrome for temps to spike and then go down, for temps getting high on high loads could you do stress tests, benchmarks and CPU intensive games or just replace the thermal paste on the CPU cooler and if that doesn't work it might be your cooler or your CPU

It's fine if it spikes temporarily and then settles after it's been open for a bit. No need to worry. Possibly replace thermal paste and reseat your cooler though to be safe.

you really think changing paste will be needed? its only been two years since.. if its just the cpu not being seated correctly it cant answer for the load..

to my knowledge load is all about cpu activity and not temps..

if i had high temps with low cpu usage then ill know that the problem is the cooler for sure

It doesn't hurt to reapply thermal paste and reseat your cooler. You could potentially drop your average temps by a few degrees.

But I stand as where I was before, the cpu spike is fine when opening chrome, or any software for that matter.

try it on your pc and report back please

even if the cpu need to change thermal paste.. it still doesnt count for the high load..

not because the temps are higher means the cpu should be under much load like that

Chrome is one of those programs where it can load your cpu, depending on how you have it set up. Example, if you restore tabs upon opening it, this will require a lot of work, and then any applications that run in the background (e.g adblock) is extra work.  As long as the load is a mere spike, and not something which lasts, it's all good, providing your temps are safe.

This is normal. The cpu draws more power when working harder. You just probably haven't noticed for the past 2 years.

Normal... You can try cleaning some dust, or change paste, but those probably won't do that much. If you have many addons installed, browser will require more initial power from CPU to load them all. You should see similar spikes when loading heavy sites or video. I'm constantly at 45-55C temps with 5-15% loads. Since they are well under warning levels, and don't hurt anything, I just don't mind about them.

hmm sometimes my load goes to the 30's.. the last option i'll do is clean  and change thermals.. sigh.. its just a lot of work to do again..

Just dusting system shouldn't be that big of task. I'd say you don't need to change paste. Thats for insecure ones. It doesn't seem like paste would be bad, temps would be maybe 10-15C higher for light load if that would be the issue.

Do note that room temp has also effect on CPU temps.

to think about it, its been hot for the past two weeks.. i didnt think it would have much effect..

and yeah.. temps are 10-15c higher rn .. i cleaned the fans on the evo with a cloth and rubbing alcohol.. im getting better results but temps still spikes from time to time.. i'll see how things go
