I've got a bunch of 'old' hardware lying around and for the past year or so it has just been collecting dust in the corner. Obviously there is the option to sell it, but I was hoping to hear some other options. I already have a gaming PC and a NAS, and I have no use for an HTPC. I've thought about setting it up as a Pfsense router, but I can't think of a compelling reason to do so. I've also thought about setting up a webserver and setting up a website, but for right now I don't have anything to host.

Anyway, specs/available hardware:

  • G3250
  • 8gb ram
  • 3.5" HDD's: 250gb, 750gb, 80gb
  • 2.5" HDD's: 320gb, 320gb

P.s. any ideas about what to do with the storage? It's too small/old/shitty to bother throwing in my NAS and I already have a 640gb drive in a fire safe and a 2tb passport to satisfy any portable storage needs I might have.

This might be boring for many but if it were me I would probably crack open at least one of the drives like the 80gb one for example and take the magnets out. They are really strong and can be handy for some hobbies (also magnets are fun by themselves).

Other than that I can't think of anything neat you could do.

Gaming, browsing, programming, et cetera. If any of those are interesting to you.

Otherwise, you could set up a surveillance system. A 500GB can hold 4 week's length 720p streams if I remember correctly.

I'd rather not boot up XP on a live machine. It would be too painful to experience again for a few games which is why I use a server for gaming.

Testing programs in a VM is a little easier, in my opinion, as a crash will affect only the VM and not the host.

Let's say you're trying to look up something too... risky?... and want to obscure the whereabouts of your data.
