I know that you can SLI lets say a 1080ti from msi with one from asus for exemple. But what are the impacts on performance, if there are any, and is it the same case for cards within the same company but not the same version (lets say a founders with a gaming x both from msi)

If you get a FE and pair it with a custom, your SLI performance won't be as high as 2x custom (assuming they aren't throttling due to lack of airflow), but it will be better than 2x FE.

This is because of the differences in clocks. Most custom cooled cards have a higher boost clock and often have a factory OC. SLI clock speeds aren't synchronous, but the difference in performance between a FE+Custom and Custom+Custom will probably end up being a few frames at most.

No impact on performance assuming the same clocks.

I guess you just need to oc the fe as high as the custom to have no performance loss

Pretty much. Most custom cards aren't much faster than a FE out of the box. Maybe 5-10 FPS depending on the game/resolution. It shouldn't be too hard to close that gap.

Here's a pretty good comparison of multiple custom 1080's vs a FE 1080. I couldn't find a comparison for the 1080Ti models

However, here's a pretty detailed vid showing a FE 1080Ti vs a liquid cooled FE 1080Ti.
