Any AM2/AM2+ experts? Help!

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

Did a google search, and had to look at some older topics.

You might have to go used, because they are out of stock @ that store. So: yes, there are those kind of boards. Just look on ebay or sites like it.

I am having great difficulty finding a new motherboard for my old phenom II x4 940 system. I'm looking for an upgrade from 780g chipset to 790gx chipset. Iv figured out the original 920/940s are not am3 socket compatible as they do not have the right memory controller to work with ddr3 motherboards.

So my question is, are there ANY am2/am2+ DDR2 ONLY 790gx chipset motherboards?

Hoping theres some older enthusiasts here as all I can't find is info of people wrongly recommend people 790gx ddr3 boards for there 940s when they will not work.

Nope, I can't. I used an Asus M2N SLI Deluxe in the past, with a 570 chipset. Would fit your phenom I think, and I only overclocked a bit on it.

Got to that Biostar motherboard, by using google. Searched for "am2+ 790gx chipset", which got me to an old tomshardware topic. Pressed "CTRL+F", and entered "790". There I found the link to the biostar mobo.

Toms hardware topic link: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/255171-30-chipset-choices

Also, maybe someone can comment on this, but I think Biostar wasn't the best back then...

Yea that's kind of a what I've heard about biostar. Iv found another stating that the 940/920 would need the sb750 chipset but that's confusing as a lot of the am3 boards have that also. There's board with 790gx/sb750 from gigabyte ive found that is advertised as am2+ with added ddr2 controller but also am3 CPU support. MAYBE this is the board I'm looking for what you think ? http://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-MA790GP-DS4H-rev-10#ov

I think that gigabyte board has like an added emulator of sorts allowing the use of ddr2. Says somthing about built in ddr3 Sideport memory.

You are going to use an AM2+ CPU in this motherboard, so yes. It will support your DDR2.

Right the thing is there are am2+am3 boards that don't support the 940 also which is why this so so confusing.  But I think your right that this board is built in away that its different from some of the others.

I am not an expert, but I do know how search engines work, and how websites work. (a bit)

I went to the link you provided, and went to the CPU support page. (first screenshot) Your old Phenom II X4 940 is listed in the official supported CPU list. It should work fine. It also tells us it's AM2+ socket. And that socket will require DDR2 memory. Don't know if it's emulated, but I doubt it. According to the official information, DDR2 works fine with your CPU when used in this motherboard. Only issue you MIGHT have, is the incorrect BIOS. But I highly doubt you can find an old board like this one, with an older BIOS then version F3. (trying to say: you won't have any BIOS issues due to not being supported)

Just so you are aware the x4 920 and 940 in basic as possible can't be told from the chipset that it needs to run ddr2 and vide versa instead of ddr3. It must run ddr2 so the motherboard must just no on its own and not ask weither it can or can't even though the chips are identical to the 945s is every way apart from this one thing. The 945 and any other phenom II can distinguish between them and thus lies the problem with the 940s.

Are you going to add DDR2 or DDR3 memory in the motherboard. If you add DDR2 ram, and if you are going to add that 940, it should work according to the board manufacturer. If it does not work for you... Have you tried? Because all sources I can find say it will work.

I'll be using ddr2. I think your right this board is in a sense a spiritual successor to my board I have now. Which is a similar 780g chipset gigabyte board. I'm on the hunt now for one on eBay. Thanks friend your google skills are much better than mine Iv spent a good couple days on and off finding nothing like you found in a few minutes..
