Greetings,

So right before, I am from Germany and I apologize for my bad english. I don't get to write or speak english often....

I have started thinking about building my own PC in 2015 and started planning back then. Someday I resignated and quit planning for it.

Now I have got back and went really into detail (as far as i could) for planning this build. Consuming all of LTT Videos on YT for more information.

I wanted to pay about 1000€ and got now at 1072€ and maybe i can go (if it is worth it) up to 1200€.

My Aim is basically an all-round gaming pc, for older gaming titles and aswell newer once. I dont really prefer "Ultra High Quality" gaming. I could live with settings from mid to high, but I hope with this build i got a long time solution for the upcoming titles.

I mean i deal until now with an Acer Aspire 7730g, which is going to celebrate 10 years of usage this year :). And deep in my Heart I hate this noisy slow vista operating piece of plastic.

Back to my build

Here a link to a german shopping site for hardware with the best prices I could find for my build:

https://www.mindfactory.de/shopping_cart.php/basket_action/load_basket_extern/id/01489b22157476c35a7d1d7b36e863ad57cd885fdb45c49faa6

And this is my Build with my thought on it:

I want it to be a black and white themed unsuspicious rectangle under my desk. So perhaps my decisions were sometimes made by colors.

Crossfire and SLI wont be an Option for me(Prices, Power Consumption and Outcome)

Case: Bitfenix Shinobi Black (It's a simple and smooth design and perhaps a good choice for a beginner like me.)

CPU: Xeon-E3-1231 V3 (Back in 2015 it was like an Insider-advice. And back then a good and cheap alternative to the i7 in that time and I still sticked to it. And i dont want Overclocking for now. So this should do it for me.)

CPU-Cooler: Alpenföhn Matterhorn White (Hope this is enough to handle the xeon. Maybe i'll get a problem with the height as it says 158mm. And the Case can take up to 160mm. Is it too risky?)

Mainboard: ASRock z87 extreme3 (Best mainboard i found which matches to the other Hardwares and aswell able to get upgrades (more RAM, better CPU maybe for OC. And it sticks to my Theme)

But will it work with the Xeon directly or do i have to update the BIOS ?

Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury 2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 (Again Theme and RAM got so expensive, maybe i'll swap it with 2 x 8GB if it gets cheaper again.)

GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (White Theme. No extra cost for SLI. Still nice design and in reviews it got good ratings. Cheap card for a 1060)

PSU: SeaSonic 450W 80+ GOLD Semi-Modular (Big question mark here. Just heard that Seasonic is producing PSUs for a long time. And the power should carry the rest out.)

Storage: Crucial MX300 275GB SSD    (Not much to say here? SSD for OS and Favorite apps.

Seagate barracuda 1TB HDD (HDD for Media, Games, etc.)

Case Fans: Be Quiet! Pure Wings 2 PWM x5 (2 In Front as Intake, 2 on Top and 1 in back as exhaust. I am a burned child here and fried my old Tower through overclocking in the summer during playing CS:GO to heavy...)

Monitor:  Right now I use a Samsung Syncmaster P2370HD which really sucks and isnt a Monitor for PC at all. But i dont got the money for a new Monitor. So I can deal with it. And when I can I'll get a second monitor.

Peripherals: Got everything I need already.

So, this is what i got in the end. I tried really to compare everything in its compatibilities and usages and needs I want my build to have.

What to do think of it? Did I miss some big Points maybe? Is there something, what makes no sense at all?

Because it is my first build I don't want to fail directly when ordering the parts.

Thanks for your help,

Just a desperate PC Rookie...

Looks good! I think that you should change the barracuda to a WD Blue. That's just a personal choice and it's faster. Otherwise, not too bad.

The barracuda is actually the faster of the two.

The barracuda is actually the faster of the two.

I know that that PSU is enough but maybe add a 650 in there for extra headroom for "future proofing" or as i like to call it, longevity.

Good tips so far, I didn't saw the future proofing due a PSU with higher Watt.

Still a main question is if the mainboard chipset will work correctly with the xeon, without updating it. anyways i would choose another mainboard. but for now this is a good mainboard in my opinion.

The read and write speed of the HDD doesn't really bother me because despite the fact which old grandpa i am using right now and i am a real patient person for that :)

I would still recommend Ryzen over Haswell.

The chipset will work fine, however there is a VERY small chance that the board won't come with a Haswell-Refresh compatible bios (meaning you would need a non-refresh chip in order to update the bios). Any 81/87 board has the (very small) potential to require a bios update. Any 97 board will work perfectly -- there also isn't any advantage to a Z series board other than potential SLI support.

ok i have read, that only "Z" or "X" boards are able for overclocking

so i could still use a "H87" or "H97" and maybe later upgrade my CPU and Overclock it?

You can't really overclock the Xeon anyway, so overclocking isn't an important factor.

There's no point in upgrading from a Xeon E3 1231v3 (essentially a locked i7-4790) to an i7-4790k, the difference isn't worth the massive upgrade cost. And again, I would still recommend a Ryzen CPU over Haswell (over even Kaby Lake/Skylake at this point).

Ok can you tell me please for what reason you recommend a ryzen cpu ? :)

i didnt really got information about ryzen or amd at all, because I am in the believe that Intel and Nvidia work better together

There is no relation between CPU/GPU and performance benefits (other than that a better CPU = better performance).

You get more cores for much less money with similar single threaded performance. Ryzen has IPC (performance at a given clock speed) that is similar to Haswell. A 4790k can clock about 10% higher (a 1231v3 about 10% lower). So a 4790k has single threaded performance that is about 10% greater than an R5 1600. An R5 1600 has single threaded performance that is about 10% greater than a 1231v3. An R5 1600 has 6 cores/12 threads while a 4790k/1231v3 have 4cores/8threads, so an R5 1600 has 50% more multithreaded performance.

Compared to Kaby Lake, a 7700k has a 7% IPC advantage and a 20% clockspeed advantage, so single threaded performance is roughly 25% faster than an R5 1600. But multithreaded performance of an R5 1600 is roughly 30% faster than a 7700k. In gaming a 7700k performs a bit better (at higher refresh rates) but the long-term potential (due to being so much more powerful) is far greater for Ryzen -- even now a 7700k gets close to 100% load in some games whereas something like an R5 1600 still has plenty of headroom.
