Question about memory for Macbook Pro

Hey Everyone - Heres a probably really stupid question for you today:

 

I just bought a used Macbook Pro (15" Core i7 2011) for dev work on my iPad and to test unity games on my iPad.

The only downside is it comes with 4GB RAM.

 

I know that the ram is standard DDR3 SODIMM, but you can get "Certified to work with Macbook" RAM.

I'm curious - does it have to be certified to work in a Macbook or can I just buy any kit of SODIMM DDR3 (as long as it matches the required specification.)

Theoretically any kit should work as long as the speed matches that of the one in your laptop. MacOS is a bit finicky when it comes to user upgrades so just see what kits people used at that time and if possible try getting that

Just go to Crucial's website and enter in the make, model, etc of you MacBook Pro, and it'll give you the RAM and SSD that'll work with that. Any comparable kit from a reputable manufacturer with the same specs should work.

I'm running 16GB RAM in my 2012 MBP, and it's fine. It's from Crucial, but OWC also sells "Mac" RAM (really the same as PC RAM, but they [Crucial at least] guarantee that it'll work).
