Task manager not reporting RAM usage correctly

I noticed today that RAM usage shown in task manager under the processes tab doesn't seem to add up to very much. So I added up the usage from all the processes listed (then realized I was stupid because you can see the total of all of them under the Users tab) and I realized that it's nowhere near accurate. 

 

When I go to the performance tab, it informs me that about 4GB of my memory is being used currently, which seems right considering I have a browser and a couple other light programs open, and other monitoring applications back this up. However, all the processes listed add up to about 1600MB as it's listed, or about 1.6GB. 

 

 

Is this a known issue, and perhaps Windows itself is using up memory with parts of the OS it doesn't consider a 'process'? Or should I actually be concerned?

resource monitor -> commit (highest to lowest) -> top 5 add to ~3.5gb.. under that is already under 500mb, and the list is very very small

You need to look at the "working" column. Commit would be memory reserved for the services.

top 5 add up to ~2.5gb, and under the top 2 are all >500mb..

What build? Have you tried booting into Safe Mode with Networking and finding how much it uses?

Do you have Intel RST activated on your system?

Rapid Storage Technology. It allows your SSD to cache data for faster use. It shouldn't have an effect on your RAM, but I have seen it do so.

And no I don't have RST on, don't even have an SSD currently

Only essential drivers would run under Safe Mode.

They may or may not, but there could be something (software or hardware) that is causing the issue. We have to find out which it is first.

Forgive my possible ignorance but how could it be a hardware issue? I've filled up all 16GB of my memory before, it all works

Good. 

 

Are you using Chrome, Adobe, Autodesk, or anything that will eat RAM? Can you switch to a different browser before you restart your PC to see if that's the issue?
