Close apps that are running in the background. Most phones let you track what apps are using data, so try looking at that and seeing whats causing it.

And browsing without data? only option for that is WiFi.

Edit - my bad, thought this was on about mobile network data, not computer lol. second part still stands though.

Fastest way to save bandwidth is to disable pictures in browsers.

Go in your browser and disable showing images by default : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/image-block/ You can click on squares/rectangle to load image

Add a flashblock extension/add-on to your browser : http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

Add a ad-blocker which would block most ads and reduce amount of data transferred (Flashblock would already block flash ads and replace them with a rectangle)

Sometimes it helps to disable javascript (it's a scripting language which runs inside pages after pages load, for example on this forum javascript runs in background and periodically asks the server if there are updates to your posts and that uses data, little amount but still exists). Javascript is used a lot though, and some pages won't even work without it. I use an extension which allows me to turn it on or off using a button so if something doesn't work, i can just click on the button and hit the reload page link .. here's the firefox addon : http://add0n.com/javascript-toggler.html

If you want to go further, you can install a proxy server software on your computer (For example Proxy+ in Windows is very easy to use but kinda old, CCProxy works just fine, FreeProxy also works) .. you can configure them to cache a lot of content for longer time than what web browsers usually cache. So you set the proxy in the browser and then each time you access a page, the proxy gives you cached images instead of downloading them again from internet.

Even further there are paid services, systems and solutions (like proxies) which download the pages and shrink them down and optionally convert the images on pages to much lower quality to reduce the image sizes (or they make images grayscale, or more pixelated) and then compress everything and send to your computer, to keep the data transferred very small.
