Booting from SSD

Is there any way to somehow setup a new boot partition/manager for an ssd that will boot on my laptop but not on desktop. I usualy reinstall it everytime I change it over but maybe there is away to get it to work?

Main system:

i7 6700k @4.8ghz 1.45v

You'll have the check BIOS in the laptop for that. Also, what do you mean by booting on laptop but not the desktop? The SSD is in the laptop or in the desktop?

No this does not work. It will not boot the drive. It gives the drive and unable to boot successfully

Either way. If its installed on the desktop it won't work in the laptop and vice versa.

I see what you're trying to do. I don't think anything will work, I suggest to get 2nd SSD just for Windows like e.g. 64GB one.

I can't think of a way to make it work if it doesn't work as is. If Windows is on it, then it should work in theory?

Maybe try to change boot sequence and boot from the SSD right away.

If you install this SSD to your craptop, set boot priority to first. So the craptop looks for an OS on the SSD first. Then any other drives.

 

When you then put it in your PC, make sure you set your boot priority in your BIOS to any other drive/device. If that same SSD is the only drive in your pc, it can't be done. otherwise it should work just fine.

 

If it doesn't work fine, you screwed up somewhere in the proces.

64GB Kingston SSD will be cheap, so it's not terrible. On the plus side you'll not have to switch between two of them.

Right so I set the desktop to look for a OS on a drive that doesn't have an OS and it should boot fine?

Wait, the drive isn't showing on one of the machines? If so, go to "Create and Format disk partitions" and you have to create volume.

No both drive are found fine. It just cannot successfully boot.

If the SSD you are switching contains AN OS, it will try to boot. If you used it before in your craptop, it had AN OS installed. Not the right one for that desktop pc, but it still had AN os, with boot crap on it.

 

If your main drive doesn't have an OS on it, (in your PC) it will look for an OS on your secondary drive. (for example, your SSD) As soon as it finds an boot sector, it tries to boot. Even if the OS isn't supposed to work for that desktop/craptop.

If your main drive doesn't have an OS on it, (in your PC) it will look for an OS on your secondary drive. (for example, your SSD) As soon as it finds an boot sector, it tries to boot. Even if the OS isn't supposed to work for that desktop/craptop.
