What are these things?

"AP" stands for access point, and pfSense is software to use a computer as a router.

I'm not a pro, but I've always understood it to be like this. An access point is often found in schools and corporate environments (and often a lot of them, at that) and is used for mesh networking.

Oh that actually may be a good thing for my house (7000 square feet) as a mesh network wouldnt work amazignly in it. Thanks for the info!

Sure. They are wired in, but extend the network wirelessly. That way you have one network SSID and better coverage.

not exacly, an acess point could use cables too. its any acess to a network, wether its from a switch, a wifi signal, or a 4g signal. (say those usb 4g internet cards)

thoug hit is more commonly reffered to as a wireless AP  (WAP)
