Upgrading boot ssd to m.2

Hi forum,

 

I was thinking about upgrading my 5 years old ocz vertex 4 into something newer and a bit faster ssd before it fails and M.2 came to mind.

Do you have any good reliable recommendations for a m.2 ssd that my motherboard would support? Price tag around 200 euros max.

 

I would swap the ocz drive to act as a primary data storage with my wd caviar black 1tb

 

My mobo is MSI Z170A PC MATE and I'm using i5 6600K and gtx 770

M.2 SSD up to 80 mm.  Note that it will disable SATA 1 and 2 (SATA slots on your motherboard).

Do notice that only an NVMe SSD will be faster than the traditional SATA SSD's.

So i just need to move existing sata cables to other slots? I only have the 2 drives mentioned and an optical drive.

Well, that's what the spec sheet on your motherboard says, just those two slots are reserved when you use the M.2 slot.  Shouldn't be anything more than moving the cables, as you said.

Yes, you could do that. 

 

The disk numbering in disk management might go a bit weird on you though.
