CPU for Mini Server

Go to solution Solved by The Benjamins,

I think the R5 will be best because it gives more room to grow. The i3 will be faster in single core performance but if you start stacking a lot of stuff then the R5 will handle that better.

and depending on your cooling solution you can overclock the R5 when the i3 can't. (I would not overclock it to the max just a bit.)

i made this a topic a week ago, but now that the reviews have come out for the Ryzen 5, which would be better for a mini server, running a cs:go server, a website, or any other 1 core only functions, with a maximum of two of these running at once.

Ryzen 5 1400 (4 core - 8 threads) = 170$

i3 - 7100/7300  (2 core - hyper threaded) = 110-150$

i know, however, its meant to be a ridiculously tight budget. so ive looked at xeons, but only found it affordable in second hand ebay like websites, and even then i can rarely find one not already purchased.

Well in that case definitely the Ryzen. 4 cores vs 2 cores. 8 threads vs 4 threads. I wouldn't even consider the i3 for a server. No matter the budget.
