Hi, so as a university student/college student living away from home. I am staying at a studio complex that has internet connection via wifi. Apparently my internet connection is fiber connection with a download speed capable of 100mbps. I am not expecting the full 100mbps through wifi but i am only getting around 10mbps or less. My laptop wireless adapter is the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265, which seems to be 802.11ac (not sure, if someone can confirm this. would be nice) but in my settings, it says my protocol is 802.11n. Also the wifi node is capable of supporting both 2.4ghz and 5ghz band but my connection is on 2.4ghz. how can i change it to 5ghz bandwidth? If i do would that improve the connection? The stability of my connection is absolutely horrible.

It might just be a crappy signal. Your wifi adapter should automatically pick the 5Ghz band (given that it has the same SSID) unless it can't get a good signal.

Also, it probably says 802.11n because the router doesn't support ac.

I assume you're sharing the 100Mb/s connection, are you sure your connection isn't just limited to 10Mb/s by whoever owns the network?

If you want better wifi you could get a USB dongle with an antenna, or install a signal booster, or a repeater. Or maybe get a powerline adapter.

Does you mum know you're here?

I can't really change the wifi router. Since i am staying at a studio complex with 3 different unit complex. The router is in a different unit. But the main problem is that this is controlled by the ISP or the building owner and i do not have any authority in changing this unfortunately. I can certainly ask for it to be changed.

The wifi connection is already being signal boosted. I think the wifi signal booster is a dual band, that is what the person working at my ISP said as he changed this recently. I do not know if the actual router was changed though. Could that be the issue why i cannot connect to the 5ghz band? Also have considered a powerline adapter. main issue is that i do know not if the powerlines from my complex (C) is the same as the powerline in complex (A) where the router is.

As for the download speed. I dont think it is limited. as i sometimes but very rarely and for a short period get over 10mbps. but mostly it just varies between 7 and 8mbps. Funny enough my upload speed is higher than my download speed.
