I have a gaming laptop with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 950M and recently thought about overclocking it. I haven't got a laptop cooling pad and would be running off the built in cooling fans. The little research i did suggested against it but i wanted some more educated opinions.

Thanks.

I wouldn't overclock a GPU in a laptop because it will most likely thermal throttle because of the lack of cooling.

It really depends on the type of airflow your laptops has.

As for overclocking, check the current load temperatures for your laptop.

If it's less than 83 GPU, then overclocking would have an impact.

Otherwise it's wiser to leave it alone.

If you really want to OC your GPU, then download something like GPU-Z or HWMonitor and check the load temeratures of your GPU. If the temps don't surpass the `80*C barrier, then go ahead and try fiddeling with the clocks. Just remember that around 84*C you will start to thermal throttle.

I had a laptop with GTX 850M (same as 950M) and I got around 15-20% FPS boost after overclocking. I was able to reach stock 860M performance.

Mobile maxwells can't be overclocked over +135Mhz without custom bios so +135Mhz should be safe and easy as long as your laptop has adequate cooling. Many people also overclocked GTX 860s with custom bios and were able to overclock +250-300Mhz core speed.

My 850M had DDR3 memory and anything over +160Mhz memory overclock caused artifacting.

Hey Mr. Palmer.

I have an Asus Rog g551jx. It has a 950m 2gigs DDR3. I overclocked it using MSI afterburner. +135 and +175. Anything more than this on the memory clock leads to artifacts. Good thing is that my Asus is quite good in cooling. Even then I use a fan as a precaution.

The temperatures are well below 85 degrees even after 2 hours of constant gaming( that too RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER).

Sad that the 950m is the bottleneck as while playing, the CPU usage hardly crossed 40% whereas the GPU was under full load. Still I recorded an AVG temp of 80.

Hope this helps.
