Front Panel Connector Confusion

Hello,

 

I've been conducting some research into the front panel connectors of the NZXT S340 Elite (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case, see here and installing them onto the MSI Z270 GAMING PRO CARBON, see here.

 

Looking at both the manuals of the S340 and Z270 I'm confused about some of the connectors whether they're supposed to be positive or negative.

 

This is the diagram of the Z270 motherboard:

 

 

This is the diagram of the S340 case:

 

 

Looking at the Z270 connector 2 (+) and 4 (-) Power LED these match up to the diagram of the S340 case. The Power Switch connector also matches to the diagram of the S340. However, the HDD LED doesn't match up. On the S340 it doesn't indicate which is positive or negative. Am I right in thinking it doesn't matter which orientation this connector connects to the motherboard or is there an indication on the connector itself?

Nope, LEDs can oriented only one way. Normally the black or white cable is the ground (-) one, and the colored is the positive (+) one. However, if the cables aren't colored, just put the connector on one way - if the LED works, you're good to go, if not, just turn it upside down, it should work now.

LED's (Light emitting diodes) are polarized -- if they are connected the wrong way, they will NOT function.

(Little Electrical Engineering fact: reverse voltage will case the diode to go into breakdown mode, and too much can damage the LED)

 

Check the S340 connectors again; you may find a little arrow on the back side of the connectors.

The *arrow* indicates the (+) connection.
