Noob RAM question

Go to solution Solved by rn8686,

It will work fine, the board can support speeds up to 3866MHz. Even if it didnt support the speed, it would just run at the highest it supports.

Edit: You will have to enable XMP (Extreme memory profile) in BIOS/UEFI for it to run at full rated speed (Otherwise it will just be 2133 by default).

So I've decided to get an i7 7700k and the Asus Strix z270E motherboard.

Looking at the specification of the motherboard under memory, I notice some speeds aren't there like 2400mhz, would it be a problem if I baught ram that is that speed?

PC partpicker doesn't say there is a comparability issue, but I want to be sure, I was looks at getting 2x8gb DIMMS.

Also open to RAM recommendation, rig is mainly used for gaming, not photo or video editing

The rated speed you find in the memory modules' specifications (i.e. 2133,2400, 2666, 3000, 3200, etc.) is (in most cases) the XMP speed. That means that you will have to enable XMP (Intel Extreme Memory Profile) in order to achieve that speed. Otherwise, the memory will run at the base speed for DDR4 which 2133 MHz. Because of that, every board that supports DDR4 memory of any speed will work with every DDR4 module there is. The memory may just run at a lower speed than it's rated for.
