So I just filled my 8 port switch, my network consists of the virgin super hub 3 in modem mode, connected to a ASUS RT-AC66U, connected to that is one wire going into the power line adaptor for my brothers room and one wire connected to the 8 port gigabit switch connected to the stuff up here, as I already said, I just used the last port on that, so my question is, if/when I need more ports, is it best to replace the switch with another one, or can I connect a second switch to the ASUS router? for the most part its for wired internet, however there is a 2tb wd NAS so would like to maintain speeds to that

You can connect another to the router, that will work fine. If you were going to expand from one switch and connect it to that, you'd be better off upgrading to something bigger, but if you're connecting to the router, it will be fine

It is best not to branch out as much as possible. each switch normally has ports x 2 x rated speed of back bone speed. (8 x 2 x 1 = 16Gbs) but when you branch out you create a 1Gbs bottleneck at that point. for internet use only(assuming it is under 1Gbs) you will almost never notice a performance hit. but IF you are doing local file transfers and it is going to have to flow through a bottleneck you will notice that.

so in short the ideal setup is 1 localized switch with everything attached to is. I highly recommend looking for a old 24 port Gb switch on ebay or craiglist. I got a 24 port dell for less then $50 and it serves as a great center switch for any average home.

would you say used or for something that is probably going to be used for years, is it worth buying it new?

I haven't had any issues with mine (2 years sense i got it)

they one you found looks good, it has some nice features too. it is all 1Gbs has LACP and rate limiting (2 nice things to have.)

enterprise grade hardware last a long time, the reason they are selling these is because they upgraded to faster speeds or more ports. and that one has a 90 day warranty.

Not worth buying new. Get that one, I have deployed many of them and never had any issues.

My native language is C++
