I have an old laptop with an intel Celeron 560 and a spare core 2 duo t5600... so I tried to put the core 2 duo in the Celeron laptop, but it doesn't fit (I've checked both are PPGA478 on intel specification site). After further examination of the sockets, I see a little difference. So my question is what is the best CPU for my socket (and what I need to be careful about so it will fit) and why do the sockets have the same name but aren't fiscally the same.

If they're the same socket, then it's just an old chipset that doesn't support Core 2 (or even just plain old Core) chips.

It might be better to post pictures of the processors (pin side) you have in question and your socket if you really think one can't fit in the socket.

As for your question about why some sockets have the same name but are not physically compatible... because sockets are named after their contact count. If Intel didn't see a need to up the pin count, then they'll just have to live with it and name the socket something similar.
