i7 is always going to be better, but you won't need the i7 if you have a gpu that isn't above a gtx 680. Only get the i7 if you need the hyper threading or if you have a gpu that is really powerful.

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.

What are you going to do with your PC? If you are just gaming/doing light work, get an i5-4670k. If you are doing Photoshop, Premiere, Blender, etc. get an i7-4770k. An i7 is unnecessary for gaming. If you want to save some money, you could also look to the AMD side.

i7's are also more expensive, and do not increase performance by that much

Actually with hyper-threading in testing makes the i7 get lower frames than an i5. Only get an i7 if you're creating content and not just gaming.

because the performance increase is minimal, and its a bit cheaper

clarify plz?

When Intel launched their 4th gen, they replaced the 3500 series with both 4500 and 4600 series. These are for 4 cores, 4 threads (except the weird 4570T which is 2 cores, 4 threads). The 4570 doesn't come in a K version but the 4670 does. Just more choices I guess, and yeah, could have been named 4570K.

I'm not sure if a i5 will be bottlenecked by a gtx680 but that is what I was thinking about when i said he only needed it if the was getting a really powerful gpu.

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.

An i5 can handle almost all the same GPUs that the i7 can

Most but i'm talking abut something like a gtx690 or a grx780 ti. Something nuts like that isn't something the I5 can handle.

A 4670K or a 8320 (if you are on a tight budget) would be good processors for gaming.

An i5 can handle dual GTX 680s just fine, especially considering overclocking.  Modern CPUs are very powerful, you will want to spend the bulk of your budget on the GPU.  The gaming performance improvement of the i7-4770K over the i5-4670K, when there is any at all, hardly ever breaks single digits.  In most cases there is no improvement at all, and in some cases Hyperthreading decreases performance.  Hyperthreading is not useful for games, definitely not worth the extra $100.

should i get an I5 or a I7 for a gaming pc?

Since i7 processors are generally just a bit faster and hyperthreaded compared to each model's counterpart in the i5 series, it's more reasonable to go with i5 for gaming.
