So I felt the need to upgrade to 16 gigs of ram. I currently have 2x4gb sticks of HyperX Fury Black at 1866 Mhz, on an MSI z97 Gaming 5 motherboard with an Intel Core i5 4690k at 4.0 Ghz. My question is whether I should go for two more sticks of 4 gigs or a whole new set of 8 gigs each. Is there a noticeable performance difference between dual-channel and quad-channel?

You don't have quad channel.

Even then the performance difference between normal, dual and quad channel is marginal in every day tasks

i would suggest going with another 2x4gb kit of HyperX Fury Black at 1866 Mhz. you wont need to upgrade to 32gb in a long time.

If you are pushing the limits of 8GB of RAM (you most likely are), then moving to 16GB will give a noticeable performance boost as this will significantly reduce page file usage.

Just add another two of the same 4GB sticks, don't worry about the imperceptible latency with channel switching and it is extremely unlikely that you will need more than 16GB RAM.

I find Quad channel memory gives a small performance boost in my workload, although for most people it has no real impact over dual channel, although I do have CPUs that support it unlike the 4690K.

Quad channel is reserved for intel's X series chipsets (X79, X99, etc) or server boards with the C chipsets. you may have 4 DIMM slots, but that doesn't mean you have 4 channels. if you put in 4 sticks of RAM you'll just have 2 sticks per channel, which is normal for Z97 boards.

anyway, you wont need to upgrade to 32 in a loooong time. trust me, i have 32 Gb's and never use all of it outside of editing workloads :P

so 4x4 is the way to go imo.
