Upgrading a laptop`s cooling

Go to solution Solved by knowlesy,

I would like to thank you guys for pointing me in the right direction. I manged to drop the temp and give the CPU a boost without repasting, which will get done when it arrives.

so thanks again

Hi all, I have a ROG G750JX and I am looking into upgrading the cooling system, either it be by upgrading the fans or by building, chopping and changing the parts. I would like to know has anyone heard, seen or done anything like this before?

I am having trouble finding information on this idea.

Information is power, so more is better in this case hahahaha

There are a few things you should do.

Clean out your laptop (get rid of the dust)

Repaste it with Gelid GC or Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut

Repad it with Fujipoly mk11

Undervolt your CPU.

thank you for the replies,

I have recently cleaned out out the system and repasted my chips with arctic sliver 5, This process got me a 15 degree drop, but while doing a CPU test i maxed out at 91 degrees and was starting to think on trying to bring that down.

Sure just install a custom waterloop you know and maybe put one of those Xbox one coolers on the back.

I did think of this and my problem is a low profile water block, do you know of any that are low profile enough to be fitted?

articv silver 5 isn't even that good. what CPU is on your laptop? you should be using Gelid GC or TGC. And you should undervolt your CPU for lower temps. Use Throttlestop or XTU.

I have a non-overclocked I7 4700HQ 2.40 GHz running a frequency 3.30 GHz. Running temp is 56c degrees

woah. that's not normal. if its not overclocked it shouldn't be anywhere near 90C. do OCCT and hwinfo on the side and post it.

I am new to theses programs, is this what you wanted?

yea that's hot as fuck at stock too. use XTU or Throttlestop to undervolt your CPU. You can google guides. Pretty simple. Otherwise you'll need to take apart ur machine and use liquid metal and such to bring it further down.

Thanks for your help Pendragon it is much appreciated, i will start looking into this problem right away.

Haswell on OCCT is brutal though, I don't think it's that bad. It uses AVX afaik.

But undervolting will still help.

Try TSBench from throttlestop and show me what a 1024M does

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Yes. Is that with your maximum fanspeeds? If so, I'd suggest some undervolting, and maybe a repaste. Though that's not as bad as I've seen some people get.

thanks for your help D2. yeah fans at max, i have been looking into trying to get some new fans and if i can maybe upgrade the heatsink. I am going to repaste and going to start looking into undervolting aswell

There's no upgrade for your laptop. You can undervolt or change the thermal paste. I think the paste will do well, ASUS uses garbage for it.

I have been looking into the external vacuum fans

ASUS designs their machines to be non-upgrade-able. Always have. They were the first. Even when they used MXM GPUs, they made proprietary PCBs so newer cards couldn't be used in older models. They were the first to use soldered CPUs in higher end machines.

That dose suck, I quite like this machine just a few tweeks to keep it upto date, every now and then and i would be quite happy

Yeah look at a teardown video and get some good paste in there. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is the new paste on the block, though IC Diamond is always a good bet (remember when removing ICD that you need to gently remove it, and soak it in isoprophyl or arcticlean if it's being tough to get off). If you're up for it, liquid metal can do well too.

Thanks mate, I have seen liquid metal come up a few times so I am going to have to look into this.
