Will power.

You need to have the mental fortitude to say to yourself, "I need to get this done, I NEED to do this and focus."

When you just start out learning to focus heavily on a single task it can be hard, but once you fall into the groove of applying yourself on what you need to do, then it will become easier over time.

Just like when I started playing the piano I could barely sit for an hour, stumbling over myself and constantly wanting to stand up and just not be sat doing the same thing over and over again. Now however, after several years, sitting down and playing the same piece for hours on end focusing is just something that comes naturally.

Now, I'm not saying it will take you a long time to learn to just focus yourself, just that you need the mental fortitude to apply yourself (As kind of hard, as it can be).

I find having a schedule to be very effective. You need to set a time for yourself for academic use, have an alarm for it if possible. It doesn't even need to be long, 1-2 hours a day is enough if you really solely dedicate your time to it and that means:

1. No phones

2. No random checking irrelevant videos or even a single webpage (you can even just load the necessary webpages or download the videos and turn off your internet connection which I found to be more effective)

3. Not using it as chore time and spend 15-20+ minutes tidying up your room just to pass the time

4. No eating (If you want to eat snacks you should eat it before or after the session)

If you're not mindful of time, you'll tend to procrastinate often with a mindset of "this video/game will only take a few minutes and I can do what I need to do later" and end up realizing you've spent the entire day with minimal to no progress and shrugging it off and saying "oh I can just do it tomorrow since I have a lot of time" until you reach the last few days before the deadline where you either fail to do it or create a subpar product in the end.

I've read a quote from Virtuallyvain, the guy who did those african drug lord videos which really struck me and it goes like:
"The worst feeling ever is not improving. That over time you're actually getting worse, less intelligent, weaker, less skilled"
