Hi! I am new to the forums, actually signing up for this issue!

I will soon be getting around 260$ maybe up to 310$ as a maximum, unsure as of now. I have looked at headphones online, having the m50x's catch my eyes many times, but then I go here, and see they're.. Not the first option, lol. What I am 'rocking' now is an Astro a40 TR setup, with the Mixamp Pro TR. A very 'gamery' based headphone, but pretty high end on at least the console gaming spectrum of things. Now times have changed, I have joined the PC side of things, and well, I like music a lot more! I want to dedicate more to it!

So now that I explained what I have, I'll explain what I want. As a general rule of what I listen to, I a lot of times go to MrSuicideSheep's YouTube channel, and listen to basically everything there. Minus that, I listen to a lot of rock like the band Our Last Night, Bring Me The Horizon rarely, but that kind of music, Red, EDEN, that's the kind of genre I'm aiming toward.

I do not know ANYTHING on DAC's or AMP's.  So if I get headphones that are harder to run, I will not have any clue of what to get with it. That's also why I mentioned I have that Mixamp TR, because I am unsure if it will work as a decent amp or not.

Now, what I would like for my 'gaming' PC setup is something with the antlion modmic 4.0, so we will need to include that into the price. That's about 55$ down. What I would like is I'm hearing open back is better every time, and my environment is good for it, so if my genre of music fits to gain those benefits, it would be preferred, but not required. With my budget, I just want to have some advice on what I should look into for my general audio setup. I am not interested in earbuds, or speakers. Just over ear headphones, and whatever I would need to have them sound the best I can with my budget, being AMP's or DAC's or anything inbetween.

A last note, if that Mixamp is like terrible for whatever reason, the onboard I could use would come from the motherboard with Crystal Sound 2. The Asus X99-PRO/USB 3.1. This is a link to it. http://pcpartpicker.com/product/kWX2FT/asus-motherboard-x99prousb31

Thanks for absolutely any advice, and also as my first forum post, I did build this computer from the inspiration of this YouTube channel when I was 16. I'm 17 now, and hope to eventually get that dream setup before college, so thank you LinusTechTips community!

If I look at the audio board's recommended gear, I levitate toward the AKG K612 Pro's but again, I haven't heard many headphones at all. I don't know what will sound 'good' to my genre. So any advice will help, thanks for reading!

Ah yes the K612's, they a very "neutral" (uncolored) in their audio and they have a huge soundstage with very good positional audio and very detailed audio, but they do have a lot less bass than the A40's and it is a sound signature that a lot tend to find boring. I personally love them and love how Volbeat and other rock bands sounds with them, but this is very personal so I cannot say if you also would love them with rock.

one big con of the K612's is the headband, it is very hard but luckily they are very light and you can easily mod the headband a bit.

I would also look into some HD600's or HD650's if your budget allows it.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Thanks for some help! Ehhh I don't think the HD600+ would work in my budget honestly. The impedance on them is 300 so I worry I would need some sort of amplifier to run them. But yea any better open back headphones I should look into to get that bass back that the K612's are missing?

Impedance with headphones doesn't really matter at all, I explain it in the pinned post.

If you want some bass then DT990's would give you that, but they also give you a treble that can be a bit too much for some people or the DT880's less bass than the 990's, but also less treble (can be a tiny bit too much)

The DT990's look very viable. You just said impedance doesn't matter so xD but these have 250 ohms I notice. Well actually, 250, and 32 ohms flavors. Both fit in my budget, so which should I get? And I don't need an amp or anything with them, and I'll get plenty of volume?

the impedance matters like 5%, the 250 will be a tiny bit harder to drive and just to be safe just get the 32

With this astro mixamp, it gives me a nice EQ and I personally have been messing with it for like a year now lol. Those are the EQ settings I've placed in and loved for quite awhile now with my genre of music. I don't know if that helps with picking my headphones out at all, but from what I can tell online, the left is bass, and the right is treble. So I think I'll like the massive treble of the dt990's, and I mean the knob most to the left for bass is almost max, but seems i like that treble almost more lol idk. Just thought maybe this would help lock in our choices if it says anything.

That looks terrible. In any case, beyers tend to be laid back in the upper mids, so you may still need eq.

Needing the EQ is fine, but are the dt990's still the best option for me around that budget, or would something else suit better for the money in my case?
