Hello,

relevant hardware:

Gigabyte GA-b75m-d3h rev. 1.1

Intel i5 3470

I am looking for advice on whether or not a nvme pcie 3.0/2.0 ssd (either a intel series or an m.2 pcie adapter...see link below) would be able to plug into by PCIE Gen 2.0 4x port on my motherboard. The CPU has its native x16 lanes for by graphics card. I am curious to know if my motherboard chipset can use that port for storage purposes. According to the motherboard manual the b75 chipset has up to 8 pcie 2.0 lanes separate from the cpu pcie lanes.

If I got one of these SSD's...would it work and would I have to do anything fancy to set it up as just a storage drive. I have no desire to make it my boot disk. I would be using it for storage of video editing projects, scratch disk, games. The OS and other basic apps will go onto my SATA3 SSD. Other archived pics, movies, videos will go onto the HDD's.

It will work as long as you have the lanes, have an OS that supports the standard, and a chipset that allows PCIe for booting if you intend to.

Thanks for the response. Do you think the pcie 2.0 will lower the performance of whatever nvme storage I install? Would I be able to easily set it up in disk management in Win10?

I doubt you would notice a performance difference, pcie 2 x4 is still 4gb/s I believe, which is faster than consumer SSDs.

Yeah...I dont want to edit the BIOS to get it to be a boot disk.

I just have Windows 10 home....will that OS support the drive in question???

You're good. NVMe is available on 8.1 and 10, while 7 has access after an update. Anything prior is a no-go.
