Home storage advice

I'm putting together a computer for my mother to use as her daily pc and to function as our home storage setup and want to build a raid 5 array for redundancy and efficiency using  2tb wd blues.

I just want to make sure that if i order 3 of these drives that i can configure them to raid in windows 10 and have 4 tbs of space total. If im right, one drive can fail and all of my data will still be there.

Am I right?

Yes, you are right.  Although the total space will be a bit less than 4TB (as reported in windows) because each drive is a bit less than 2TB (as reported in windows).

 

For a RAID array the REDs are a (very slightly) better choice than the BLUE's.

why are reds better than blues? is it worth the larger cost?

They are designed for RAID arrays.   ie; behave a little better on spin down / power config, etc.

Worth it or not is really your choice.
