Ryzen 5 Upgrade - Opinions?

Hey, I'm going to be build a new PC using the very soon to be released Ryzen 5. This is what I've put together, the only thing missing is a CPU cooler - I'm looking for recommendations on that. Otherwise I'm just wanting some opinions. I'm upgrading from an old FX-8350.

What to keep in mind:

  • No more than $1000 CAD on the upgrade before tax/shipping.
  • I'm not ordering each part from a different store, shipping is expensive in and to Canada. I want to try and keep things combined between just a few places.
  • I'm aiming for a black/white colour scheme.
  • If it's marked as purchased I already have it from previous PC(s) and I will be reusing it.

As marked on the pcpartpicker, I will for sure reuse the following components:

  • GPU: EVGA FTW+ GTX 1060 6GB
  • Mass storage drives: WD 2TB & 1TB
  • PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 750w

I know what I'm doing but I'm looking for second opinions on anything that could be changed and for compatibility. If you're going to make a suggestion, it would be seriously appreciated if you could tell me why or else I honestly won't care.

Here it is: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/B7b4m8 (updated with cooler)

Remember I'm particularly looking for CPU cooler suggestions. I just want something that will allow for a good overclock while remaining nice and quiet. It can be air or AIO liquid, doesn't matter. It must be AM4 compatible (obviously).

Thanks everyone!

If you want quiet, with a moderate to heavy overclock then you want liquid. An H100i would be a good choice as it is already AM4 compatible and personally I like their software. Corsair did just release the AM4 bracket for the Hydro Series coolers that were not compatible. I just got my shipping notification last night for my H115i. otherwise a NZXT Kraken would be a good choice, or if you want a semi-modular solution EK has kits ready to go.

but if you want air, and quiet, then a Dark Rock Pro is probably in your future. though with the Pure Rock standing at 155mm proud and fitting in my P400S case, i'm not sure how much room there is though as the DRP3 is 8mm taller. it'll probably fit, but it'll be toit.

Thanks, that's really helpful! The NZXT Kraken and Dark Rock Pro I will certainly look into. I'm conflicted about the H100i from Corsair. I've currently got the H80i and it's been nothing but trouble for me, I'm not interested in another similar product from Corsair.

One question, with let's say the Kraken or Dark Rock Pro, will they include an AM4 mounting kit or will I have to request it separately from the company? I'm not entirely sure how that works.

I found another AM4 motherboard that peaks my interest and is the same price, MSI X370 Krait Gaming. The main difference is that the ASRock has built-in wifi which is super nice to have but not a necessity.

  1. ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac
  2. MSI X370 KRAIT GAMING

Which one should I go with and why?

Also, I've been considering going with the be quiet! Dark Rock 3 (not the pro). It looks like I'll have to request an AM4 mounting kit from them if I'm not mistaken, but that shouldn't be a problem. Thoughts?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
