i've just had the idea of putting a webcam at my front door,i have quite an old one around here somewhere that i could hide quite well.
not for 24/7 surveillance,i just wanna see from my computer who's at the door.
it's a microsoft usb 2.0 webcam from around 2006-8.
what would be the best and/or cheapest way to set this up?
cable length would be around 15-20m and a 20m active usb extension costs around 40€ here so not really the best solution i think

If you're connecting it to the computer with USB, the computer has to be close by because of the USB limitations. You may be able to rig up a Pi.

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Does it have programs that came with it? You could possibly look at it through that program.

I have a doorbell cam from Vivint and it works great.  It alerts you with the doorbell ring as well as an alert on your phone.  That way you can see who's at your door when your not home as well.  I would suggest one of those.  I'm sure you can buy one and make your own server to store the videos if you need it.

As others have pointed out, a Pi would be a good option, the stream the feed over wifi to your computer or phone etc..

OR

You could buy a USB/Ethernet over Powerline ... although not sure about bandwith
