Hello! I have been wanting to get into PC gaming for a while now and I'm about ready to take the plunge.

Aims: I want a machine that is VR capable, but it also needs to be small as I intend to move it around the house regularly depending on what I'm using it for. I am undecided on overclocking yet, but would like the ability to do so. The three main uses are: Living room 4k couch gaming - (AAA games like Dishonored 2, Watchdogs 2 etc), VR, work (mainly data some light data analysis)/developing some VR applications

Equipment needs: As this would be the first desktop I have ever owned I need a full computer, mouse and keyboard. Although most gaming will be done with a controller (which I already have). I don't need any monitors. The work I do requires a lot of ram so I can't compromise on anything less than 16 GB.

Budget: Ideally I want the entire system + the Vive to come in at £2,000, so the PC would need to be ~£1,250 (I'm in the middle of the UK). Although I am willing to stretch to a total cost of ~£2,100 if there is a sufficient performance benefit. I will need a Windows 10 license.

EDIT: I have just bought the VIVE as it was £100 off because of the anniversary. So total cost of PC can be ~£1,350.

This is my current parts list https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Clank001/saved/QWxsYJ .

I have thought about going with AMD what with the imminent release of Ryzen 5 however, I haven't been able to find any release dates for m-ITX AM4 boards. It would also be really useful to have this machine by the end of April at the latest so I'm not sure about waiting for more VEGA details either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Get better power supply like Seasonic S12ii or EVGA G2, and also thermal paste isn't needed.

Also get windows from kinguin.net instead and you're all set.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Instead o the gtx 1080 maybe you should go for the 1080ti because it can do 4k at 60fps and in some titles its faster than the titan x

Thanks, so the included paste with the cooler is good enough? Any tips on what to look out for with PSU's? I've mainly gone by the energy efficiency and then ordered by price.

I looked up Kinguin, the additional "buyer protection" that they offer rang alarm bells for me. They seemed to be similar to sites like G2A, so grey market at best, so I'm hesitant to trust them.

Yeah, the paste is good enough.

For PSUs, it's kinda hard to tell. Efficiency doesn't tell the whole story; there are lots of other factors in a good psu, including modular cables and voltage ripple. You can't tell just by looking at the specs; usually you have to look at good reviews to see for sure. jonnyguru.com has reviewed pretty much every power supply that you might consider. Usually, any psu with a score of at least 8.5 should be fine. You should pay special attention to the performance and build quality sections. You could also check out the LTT PSU Tier List. You should stick with tier 3 and above for nearly all builds, with tier 4 being a last resort for very budget builds. Anything lower, quite honestly, shouldn't be bought.

Yeah, kinguin can be a little sketchy, especially since when you get the windows key it's literally a picture of a sticker. However, I've never heard of it not working, and kinguin itself is fine. I'm pretty confident in the buyer protection thing, as in case the third party seller you get the key from gives you one that doesn't work kinguin will get you another. It seems a bit sketchy but it does work and saves you at least $50. If you want the peace of mind you could buy a 100% legitimate one but it does work if you wanna save some money.
