16GB ram on 8GB Mobo Unit ?

Hey i know it sounds kinda newbie but is it possible if i can put 16 or 12 Ram on a motherboard that only support 8gb max.
I have seen people talk about some motherboard works even tho their advertised ram support were 4gb but it picked 8gb too.
i'm not sure if its true.
Is it possible?
The Motherboard i have is ASUS P5K-Premium. Right now i have 2GB on each 4 ram slots.
Would love to hear your input about this.

Thanks.

Go ahead and try, most likely wount work.. Worked for me once, but that was HP messing up specs, they said a max on the machine, but when I looked the motherboard up, it did indeed support more than HP said.

A P5Q Deluxe has problems with more than 8GB of RAM even if its DDR3-and its supposed to be capable of handling it, so it is in theory, but without even official support I'd say no.

If someone else has done it, look it up - it depends on the mobo manufacturer. Update your BIOS and try it.

You're on P35, which officially only supports 8GB.

idk

Its Asus- even their newer+higher end motherboards are extremely finicky with RAM unless you manage to find the rare kits that either allow you to run DDR2 1066 in all 4 slots, or more than 8GB of RAM above 800MHz

Edit: I've found that my P5Q Deluxe will run 8GB of DDR2 in all 4 slots at 800MHz flat, with 4GB of DDR2 1066 being possible if its 1x2GB  stick in 1 slot and 2x1GB sticks in matching slots (Asymetric Dual channel-dual channel bandwidth but with 3 sticks of RAM). 2x2GB sticks at 1066 however (standard dual chanel) it won't even post.

The motherboard is responsible for what and how much RAM is supported, and I can say right now. If my P45 based (P5K are based on P35) P5Q Deluxe won't work with 16GB DDR2 outside of a few kits on the Qualified Vendors list, your P5K Premium will not work with more than 8GB of RAM (I use a Xeon X5450 on the Deluxe, with a microcode update for full compatibility).

Last time i did it it only showed the supported size.

Unfortunately, most of the time Asus LGA775 motherboards simply refuse to post if they don't like the memory configuration (same as my Grandmother's old laptop, it won't boot with 4GB of DDR2, but 2GB is fine due to the chipset limitations)
