Samsung 960 evo Vs 850 pro

Why does a 1 tb 960 evo cost the same as a 850 pro 1 tb? The 960 evo seems to be way better in everything and yet it has the same price per GB as the 850 pro which is significantly slower. (price taken from Samsung website. all prices in usd taxes not included)

960 EVO gets my vote.

 

If I remember, the 960 EVO is using NVMe with TLC while the PRO is SATA with MLC. 

 

TLC has better performance while the MLC has better endurance.

I know the 960 is better but why is it priced at the same level as the 850 pro? There should be no reason really buy the 850 pro at all.

I think it has a five year warranty and is rated for more write cycles, vs 3 years on the 960 evo. Endurancy is the reason, I guess, though remember the 850 pro was released before the 960 evo so that explains part of it.

Who knows... Samsung usually has weird pricing. NAND prices have fallen since then thanks to refinements.

PRO = 10 yr warranty

EVO = 3 yr

I checked pcpp for price history and there is usually a $50 difference between 960 evo and 850 pro (the evo costs more)

Yes it is. TLC for a rough estimate is 100TB/100GB but MLC usually seems to be touted as 200TB/100GB based on various Samsung documents.

They're meant for prosumers, editors, engineers, and small servers.

Does the average consumer ever really hit the max cycles for the ssd. Does the endurance difference matter to you as a consumer?(ie is it enough of importance to sacrifice very fast speeds)

Not in the least. I go through SSDs like candy which is to say I buy SSDs and HDDs quite often.

the pro also has more endurance, but i would still choose the 960 EVO faster read/write speeds and does not take a sata spot

 

i have had mine for 4 months and written 5TB.. so i am on pace for about 5years before i would have to look at possibly replacing and i am sure i will find something else by then lol

The pro SSDs aren't for enterprise use, yes, but there are cases where they are used where something like an evo ssd usually isn't, such as in workstations, small business servers or something similar, etc.

For someone like you, an 850 pro won't matter at all. A 960 evo would be a better option.
