Hi all. So i have just set a FreeNAS box up with the following specs:
- E8400

- 4GB DDR3

- Some HP oem board
- LSI SAS3081E-R 8-port Internal SATA/SAS 3Gb/s

- 6 160gb WD Blue in raid 1

- 18GB Zeus IOPS 3.5" ssd for writecache

The issue i have is that it will start writing at 10MB/s(100Mbit infrastructure where i am testing) and have dips about every 10-20 sec to 0Kb/s.
Have anyone experienced this issue before, and maybe found a solutiuon?

What type of file you copying over? Its bunch of smaller files or one large file (like archive). It could be bottleneck in your switch/router. It look like your ram is the problem.

About 100GB of ISO files, ranging from 150MB-8GB

I think it your ram, it running out of buffer. FreeNAS minimal requirements is 8GB.

Ram usage never goes above 1GB

I think you need to re-check your usage if you think it doesn't go over 1GB. And even if it is, that's because it knows not to use the full 4GB leaving nothing left for other processes. If you added another 4GB, it wouldn't still continue to use 1GB.

You won't find many people willing to help you as you have obviously seen the bare minimum requirements and chose to ignore them, they are there for a reason after all!

I know.
Any other OS recommendations for my hardware?

Could you upgrade to 8GB? If not, I would change to something like unRAID or maybe Windows with Storage Spaces? Haven't used unRAID myself so can't really comment on that, but it doesn't use ZFS (AFAIK) so you should be a bit safer with your specs. Storage Spaces could be an idea for you but I don't know what you use it for!

Thanks. I got it working regardless, and are now getting ~50mb/s read/write.
Next step: getting my deployment to work with both Windows and Ubuntu
