Laptop Power Brick Smells like Spoiled Food

john01dav

So, I just got my laptop charger from another room (where it was plugged in with no laptop connected), and I noticed that it has a smell that I can only describe as resembling spoiled food mixed with stinky plastic. I don't know if this is normal (ie. the plastic used to make chargers may stink), or if I should be worried and stop using the charger. If it matters the laptop is a MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro, which requires a fair amount of power. So, should I stop using this charger or is this not an issue?

It may be solder dross within the brick not properly cleaned up before assembly, in which case it should disappear over time.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

The manufacturer probably used no-clean solder flux (it makes manufacturing faster and cheaper).  The smell is similar to what you've described, and it should go away over time.
